In 2003, Loretta received the Mentor of the Year Award from CCSI.
Barbara Nicholson: Co-founder, Attachment Parenting International Long-standing Volunteer, La Leche League of Nashville
Barbara Nicholson became a volunteer with the La Leche League of Nashville in 1981, where she found her passion for mentoring and educating and supporting breastfeeding mothers in Nashville while she raised four sons. Barbara’s background as a special education teacher and her concerns for young children led her and fellow La Leche League leader and educator, Lysa Parker, to found the non-profit, Attachment Parenting International (API), an organization that mentors parents and other caregivers who need support in empathic, non-violent parenting. They have also written a book, Attached at the Heart: 8 Proven Parenting Practices for Raising Connected and Compassionate Children (2009). Barbara continues to serve parents in Nashville by teaching Infant Massage and serving on the board of Nonviolent Communication Nashville.
Renata Soto: Executive Director, Conexión Américas Executive Committee Member, National Concil of La Raza
Renata Soto is Executive Director of Conexión Américas. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the National Council of La Raza. Renata is a natural mentor. She encourages the women around her to be their best through her words and actions every day. She is an inspiring reminder that one person can truly make a difference. Through Renata’s relationships with the participants in the Conexión Américas programs, she mentors Latina women, many of whom are immigrants and who are struggling with language, cultural barriers, and often poverty and lack of education. Renata mentors these women as they aspire to start new businesses, attempt to navigate the U.S. school system, buy their first home, and develop the confidence they need to engage and belong in their new community.
