Sandra Collins
Retired Instructor, Lipscomb University
Sandra Collins received her BA and MA from Indiana State University. She has been instrumental in improving the lives of those around her. As an English instructor, she encouraged her students to use writing as a means of expressing their own feelings and needs, and, through this, to find ways to meet those needs.
After volunteering in a housing project in Nashville, Ms. Collins saw the needs of the women there and responded by helping to found the Wayne Reed Christian Childcare Center, which serves inner-city preschool children.
She continues to reach out to women in India through a church community that offers women assistance with needlework skills, knitting, and crocheting as a means to create products to sell.
Reverend Becca Stevens
Episcopal Priest, Founder of Magdalene House
Becca Stevens has served as Chaplain of St. Augustine's at Vanderbilt University since 1995. She founded and serves as executive director of Magdalene, residential communities designed to rehabilitate women with a criminal history of drug abuse and prostitution. Magdalene launched a non-profit cottage industry called “Thistle Farms” in 2001.
The reverend was raised in a home where giving back to the community was a high priority. That she has made it a personal priority is evident in her work. She has mentored numerous students and community members with the following basic truths: “First is that love is the most powerful source for social change in the world. Second is that love heals. I’m not called to change the world. I am called to love it.”
Kathy Hearne
Social Justice Advocate and Non-profit Entrepreneur (posthumous recognition)
Kathy Hearne’s life was rooted in the principles of social justice and service to others. She was a tireless advocate for the disenfranchised and outcast; she was the spark behind numerous community programs in Nashville and across Tennessee.
She consulted with many non-profits on matters of organizational development, administration, and advocacy, often on a volunteer basis. She often laughingly referred to herself as a non-profit entrepreneur.
While battling her physical illness, she continued to mentor others through her faith, strength of character and passion for others. She passed away in August of 2009, at the age of 57, and she leaves a legacy of women who have grown from her mentorship.
